Obstructive Sleep Apnea or OSA for short – is a serious sleep disorder. It is caused by a partial or complete obstruction of the upper airway. The obstruction is generally caused by the muscles in the back of your throat relaxing too much, large tonsils, or the tongue falling back and closing off the airway. This causes a lack of breath (oxygen) for 10 to 20 seconds, occurring from 5 to 30 (or more times) an hour, every hour while sleeping. Could you imagine holding your breath this long, this many times and hour?
