Heated tubing used optionally for CPAP therapy has a temperature sensor that measures and adjusts the air temperature at the mask to eliminate cold air from entering the nose and mouth while also eliminating ‘rainout’.
Rainout is a term used to describe the condensation buildup inside of a CPAP tube. When using CPAP therapy, the air pressure is heated by the humidifier and flows through the tubing up to the mask and into your airway. As the air travels through the tubing the temperature of the humidified air will drop rapidly and condense into water droplets inside of the tubing. This condensation can cause a popping sound inside of your tube which may disturb your sleep therapy and even cause uncomfortable moisture around the nose or mouth depending on style of CPAP mask being worn.
Using a heated tube reduces the chance of rainout by keeping the temperature of the airflow consistent as it travels from the humidifier to the mask.
Heated tubing should be cleaned weekly using warm soapy water avoiding submerging the electrical component on the one end of the tubing. Using a tube brush designed to scrub inside of the tubing is also suggested. The heated tubing should be replaced every six months of use.
