While most CPAP masks are designed with comfort in mind using hypoallergenic material to aid in successful therapy, there is still the possibility of skin irritation. If your skin is sensitive or vulnerable you may be more susceptible to skin irritation caused by CPAP therapy. Some unfortunate side effects include redness, rashes, sores, and chafing. There is however recommendations on how to improve or reduce the symptoms of skin irritation caused by CPAP.
- Make sure your mask is the correct size and style for your face. Follow the manufacturers guidelines of where to position the mask. Avoid over tightening the mask.
- Keep your face clean. The natural oils from your skin can become trapped between the silicone and your skin, so wash and dry well before applying the mask to your face. If your nighttime routine usually includes moisturizers and oils apply to your face at least one hour before bed to allow the product to absorb into the skin.
- Replace and clean your mask often. Cleaning your mask eliminates the bacteria that can cause irritation or even infection. Keep in mind, however, that the silicone material is porous and oils from your face or dead skin can become trapped in the material over time. Staying on top of your replacement schedule can ensure the mask is not causing addition irritation.
- Try a CPAP mask liner which acts as a barrier between your skin and the mask. Make sure the liner is breathable and lightweight. It can also improve mask fit and eliminate air leakage.
