Hypopnea is abnormally slow or shallow breathing. During a hypopnea event a person experiences a 10 second period when their breathing is reduced by 50 percent or more. Like sleep apnea, the C02 in the blood increases and the oxygen level in the blood decreases.
There are three types of hypopneas:
Central Hypopnea: both airflow and breathing are reduced.
Obstructive Hypopnea: Only airflow is reduced.
Mixed Hypopnea: A mix of both central and obstructive Hypopnea.
Both hypopnea and sleep apnea are serious medical conditions that can lead to other health complications. Consult with your doctor if you experience any symptoms.
